What are Stellarators?
A Stellarator is a machine that is able to replicate energy produced on the sun called fusion, same energy that powers the sun. It uses magnetic fields to trap plasma so that the same fusion can occur on Earth with both efficiency and safety. The shape of a Stellarator is a twisted, spiral shaped donut, with magnetic fields (coils) surrounding it.
Why it matters?
- No electric current in plasma – Stellarators do not require on a strong electric current unlike tokamaks do.
- Can operate 24/7 (continuously) – Capable of steady, state operation making them more compatible with the requirements of the real world power grid.
- Enables clean Carbon-Free Energy – Has the potential of revolutionizing global energy systems by providing sustainable and safe energy that doesn’t deplete earth’s fossil fuels.
